Area Map

Rockaway Township, located in northeastern Morris County, blends natural beauty, suburban neighborhoods, and a strong historical legacy rooted in early mining and industry. The township encompasses rolling hills, lakes, and wooded expanses that give it a distinctly rural charm despite its proximity to major highways and regional centers. Along Green Pond Road, Mount Hope Road, and Route 46, remnants of its industrial past mix with modern developments, neighborhood centers, and preserved open spaces.

Rockaway Township was incorporated on April 8, 1844, when it separated from portions of Hanover, Pequannock, and Morris Townships. It once included what is now Rockaway Borough, as well as parts of Denville and Wharton before those municipalities became independent. Today, Rockaway Township covers more than 45 square miles, making it the largest municipality in Morris County by area. Its communities include White Meadow Lake, Mount Hope, Green Pond, Hibernia, and Rockaway Village.

History

Rockaway Township's early identity was shaped by iron mining and smelting, industries that flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. Mount Hope Mine was among the most productive iron mines in New Jersey and operated for nearly 250 years before its closure in the 1970s. The iron ore extracted from the area helped fuel the state's industrial growth and linked Rockaway to the greater Morris Canal network.

Early settlers, primarily of English and Dutch descent, established forges and small communities around the mines. The arrival of the Morris and Essex Railroad in the mid-1800s further spurred growth and trade. Historical landmarks such as Ford-Faesch Manor serve as reminders of this industrial past. Through the 20th century, the township transitioned from a mining hub to a residential community, with suburban expansion following the construction of Interstate 80 and Route 15.

Community Life

Rockaway Township hosts many annual community events, including White Meadow Lake Festival Days, summer concerts at Peterson Field, and various programs run by the Township Recreation Department. The township also participates in regional celebrations such as Memorial Day parades and local festivals that foster civic pride and volunteerism.

Education

The Rockaway Township School District serves elementary and middle school students at Birchwood, Catherine A. Dwyer, Dennis B. O'Brien, and Copeland Middle School. High school students attend Morris Hills or Morris Knolls High School through the Morris Hills Regional District. Nearby, the County College of Morris in Randolph provides higher education and continuing learning opportunities.

Parks and Recreation

Rockaway Township boasts diverse natural and recreational resources, including Farny State Park, Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area, Splitrock Reservoir, and Green Pond. Residents enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and boating, while parks such as Peterson Field, Donatoni Community Park, and Mount Hope Pond offer playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic areas. White Meadow Lake, a private lake community, provides beaches and social programs for members.

Transportation

The township benefits from excellent transportation access via Interstate 80, Routes 46 and 15. Local roads such as Green Pond Road and Mount Hope Road connect neighborhoods to shopping districts, schools, and recreation facilities. NJ Transit bus routes and nearby rail service from Dover and Denville stations link residents with Morristown, Newark, and New York City.

Real Estate

Rockaway Township offers a range of housing, from lakefront and rural estate properties to modern suburban developments. Families often choose the township for its scenic environment, strong schools, and extensive public amenities, which together create a spacious yet connected community lifestyle.
