Community Event: Halloween Happening - Lantern Lit Graveyard Tour

By Turpin Real Estate - October 16, 2019

Take a guided tour of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in downtown Morristown on Saturday, October 26 from 4 to 5pm. The architect was Charles McKim of the renowned firm McKim, Mead and White, the same company that built the old Penn Station and Columbia University in New York City.

The tour will also visit the adjacent historic graveyard by lantern light. Holiday appropriate organ music from the church organist, Joshua Stafford, and  refreshments will follow in the Parish Hall as Halloween is celebrated. Costumes are welcome, and tickets are $20 each.

This rain or shine event is sponsored by The Morris County Tourism Bureau.

St. Peter’s Church is located at 70 Maple Avenue in Morristown. This historic structure has an interesting backstory: taking 24 years to complete, McKim and the congregation built one of the finest examples of neo-gothic architecture in the United States. St. Peter’s is modeled on classic English-medieval parish churches. It also incorporates elements from other Christian periods including chancel mosaics, a baptistry, the Siena-marble altar in the Byzantine style, and a Spanish-baroque rood screen. The Norman-style bell tower has 119 steps, and a carillon with 49 bells, making it one of the largest in the country.
